What's on the Horizon for Sustainability and Impact in 2025?

2024 has been an amazingly active year in the world of sustainable finance and investing. Sustainable assets under management reached a record high of more than $3.5 trillion; the SEC approved, and then stayed, its Climate Disclosure Rule; anti-ESG politicians in the U.S. continued their legislative and regulatory attacks; the EU adopted the Corporate Sustainable Due Diligence Directive; and nearly 20 countries issued consultations on adopting the International Sustainability Standards Board’s ESG disclosure regime.

With all this activity, one is left to wonder:  What’s next for sustainable finance and investing in 2025 -- especially as the world processes the results of a nail-bitingly close U.S. presidential election, gains by right wing parties across Europe, continued unrest in the Middle East, the emergence of generative AI, and a rise in the number and severity of extreme weather events.

While we don’t have a crystal ball, we are excited to bring together leading luminaries from across the sustainable finance and impact investing spaces to share their predictions on what to expect over the course of the next year, including:

Erika Karp, Executive Director – Aspen Institute’s Finance Leaders Fellowship & Principal – Cornerstone

Jeffrey Gitterman, CEO – Gitterman Asset Management

Linda Eling Lee, Founding Director – MSCI Sustainability Institute

Shiva Rajgopal, Professor – Columbia Business School
